My friend Dave sent me an email expressing rage over the fact that a prominent college in California had abolished the merit system. Grades no longer mattered, and students could graduate even if they had failing marks. Dave said he didn’t ever want to ever get a doctor who graduated from that woke school.
Giving a student a passing grade they don’t deserve is little different than giving them a subsidy. The recipient gets something they didn’t earn, something for nothing. These students are less able to do the tasks ahead. It may seem they are getting a helping hand, but if it deprives them of skill and inner strength, it is a push backwards. Nothing good comes from getting something they didn’t earn. The government and the media encourage those who get entitlements and subsidies to see themselves as victims. Once trapped in that belief, they surrender their birthright to compete for the prizes in life.
