Bill Torodor. Let's start by talking a bit about where the industry is today. There had
been a decline in the usage and purchase of Sterling Silver in the past few years. This
produced a shake-up in our industry with many companies being forced out of business. I'm
sure you have also noticed it at your local department store. They no longer carry as much
in the way of Sterling. We are finding out however that the last year or so there has been
a renewed interest in Sterling Silver flatware. People are showing more interest in
starting sets and also adding to existing sets.
I have
found large resources from different parts of the country who have survived this slow
period, and they have been willing to deal with me at very competitive prices.
We can service your Sterling Silver needs, whether matching an existing set, or
starting a new set. I welcome your call on our Toll Free number 1-800- 328-1860 ext. 8703.
Ask for me personally, Bill Torodor.
We smashed $20,000 tea services flat with a hammer because they took up less space...
We got involved in selling flatware by accident in 1979-80. During that time we had a
very large wholesale and scrap division. We had sales-people all over the country buying
gold and silver scrap from estate sales, rummage sales, jewelry stores, pawn shops, and
individuals. When silver prices went up so dramatically, we started buying fine Sterling
by weight. I hate to say it, but we put literally tons of this beautiful sterling flatware
into the smelter. Gorgeous, Silver holloware was smashed flat with a hammer and thrown in
buckets for melting. Some of our customers found out what we had done with the Sterling,
and asked if they could buy some pieces to complete their patterns or buy whole sets for
themselves or to give as gifts, and that's how we got our start selling Sterling.
We sold most of all the Sterling strictly by weight. We knew what we paid for it by
weight, took our profit, and sold from weight. We had a huge stock to draw from. When the
price of Silver came down and stayed down we decided to discontinue stock and relied on
other wholesale resources.
Recently, another phenomena, has taken place. Because Silver has been so low for so
long, the traditional sources from which this industry gets its inventory have been drying
up. This has caused a backlash. The people looking for inventory have had to actually bid
much higher than the actual cost of the silver in order to obtain the inventory. Coupled
with the fact of re-newed interest in Sterling, this has created a more competitive
market.
It's more important than ever to buy through a dealer with a national
network of suppliers.
